Harry Herff and Randall Jones first incorporated Herff Jones in Indianapolis in 1920. Initially, the company manufactured insignia type jewelry and, in its early years, expanded into the newly emerging class ring business. Through a stock offering, the company became publicly held in 1945. In 1973, the company was acquired by Carnation Company and operated as a division of that diversified company for over 11 years. In 1985, the company acquired the assets of the then Herff Jones Division of Carnation Company and again became a privately held independent company owned by employees and sales representatives. The base of employee ownership was expanded significantly in 1989 with the establishment of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). As a result of the ESOP, today over 4,000 employees have become the owners of Herff Jones Inc.
