More than 400 Companies Employ More than 8,800 Workers in the Indianapolis Region’s Motorsports Industry

The relationship between Indianapolis and motorsports is legendary. The Indianapolis 500 is the premier IndyCar event, but there’s also the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, the Red Bull Indianapolis GP, the NHRA Nationals, and the list goes on. In fact, from IndyCar to NASCAR to Funny Cars to Midgets, no place in the world has the variety of racing events the Indianapolis Region has.

More than 400 companies employ more than 8,800 workers in the Indianapolis Region’s motorsports industry, an industry that’s predicted to grow by 37 percent over the next five years. A business incubator facility in Hendricks County, not far from O’Reilly Raceway Park, is attracting top teams and the suppliers who provide the high-tech services and components needed.

They’re attracted by the ability to reach most major tracks in a comfortable drive, the specialized support services available and the ability to ship and receive vital parts overnight due to the proximity of the FedEx hub at nearby Indianapolis International Airport. New tax incentives mean every component in a race car except the tires sold by an Indiana company is exempt from state sales tax.

And – no small factor – the crews and support staff enjoy being surrounded by a community of like-minded people and the local affordable housing. More than 400 companies employ more than 8,800 workers in the Indianapolis Region’s motorsports industry, paying more than $425 million per year in wages alone.
