New "Idea" Hybrid Electric Car
Indianapolis Region-based Bright Automotive has unveiled the world's first purpose-built 100 MPG vehicle aimed at commercial and government fleets. Named the IDEA, the multi-use vehicle falls into the light truck classification. The company announced it plans to produce 50,000 vehicles annually by 2013, providing businesses and government agencies with a highly durable, cost-saving and eco-friendly new vehicle, and creating thousands of American jobs.

Traditional Strengths and Progressive Thought Yield Powerful Clean-Tech Energy Results
Pioneering Energy Technologies
In the 1980s, Hoosiers engineered the first electric car (General Motors’ EV1) in Indianapolis.
While the EV1 project didn’t last, its legacy remains – an immense pool of engineering talent focused on energy innovation that remained in Central Indiana. At the corporate level, the region is home to former GM business units and new companies focused on all aspects of advanced technology vehicles, from new battery technologies to hybrid engines, motors and transmissions. These firms brought nearly $400 million in vehicle electrification stimulus grants to the region in 2009.
Today, these companies are working together with utilities and government agencies on an ambitious pilot program (Project Plug-IN) combining electric vehicles with smart grid technologies – keeping the Indianapolis Region on the cutting-edge.
Putting the “World” in World-Class
Indiana is truly building a world-class clean technologies and energy industry.
Energy is a global challenge, and a global market – Indiana state and local officials are working hard to make international connections. We’re building great relationships with European wind power and alternative energy firms, and Indianapolis recently hosted the largest-ever delegation of Chinese automakers interested in joint ventures with Indiana electric vehicle component manufacturers.
Leading the New Energy Revolution
Our cleantech industry isn’t just about manufacturing electric cars and trucks – the nation’s largest wind farm (and major manufacturers of wind turbine components) are also located in Indiana, along with facilities accounting for a combined 1 billion gallons of biofuel production capacity. We’re home to leading research institutions and innovative utilities focused on smart grid and systems integration.
The Indianapolis Region isn’t just the Crossroads of America – we’re the nexus of the new energy revolution. Why not join us?

Industry Voice
“It’s very encouraging that companies that have traditionally been in the passenger car business are now moving into developing products for medium and heavy-duty trucks — things like FedEx delivery trucks, garbage trucks or even semis.”
